How To: WRITE A BOOK REPORT

A book report is used to show your comprehension of a story as well as your thoughts and opinions. The entire report should be 5-6 paragraphs long and should end with a signed statement that says, “I have read this entire book.”

Remember: Writing a paragraph – Each paragraph that you write should have 5-8 sentences and should have a theme. Your first sentence in each paragraph should be your topic sentence, and each sentence after it should be giving more details about that topic. If you switch to a different topic you should switch to a new paragraph! Also, do not forget to indent the first line!

I.                   Important Information (1 paragraph)
a.     Title – underlined
b.     Author – name and a little information about them
c.      Type of book – fiction, non-fiction,
biography, etc.
d.     Number of pages
e.     Setting – where does the story take place?
II.                 Summary of the Plot (2 paragraphs)
III.              Character Sketch of the Main Character
 (1-2 paragraphs)
a.     Name
b.     Personality/characteristics
c.      What they did in the story
d.     What they taught you through the story
IV.              Would I recommend this book? Why or why not? (1 paragraph)
V.                “I have read this entire book” with your signature

Example:
Story Title
                        Brianna Arnold
This is the topic sentence for my first paragraph. This paragraph will contain the Story Title as well as which type of book it is. It will tell you the number of pages in the book and the setting in which the story takes place. Then I will write the author’s name and a little about their life. Now I close my paragraph and move on to my next one.
This is the topic sentence for my second paragraph. I am beginning to tell you the summary of the plot…
